About
A little about me.
I'm Liam — a Chartered Civil & ITEEE Engineer working at the intersection of design, data, and digital delivery on major infrastructure projects.
What I do
I'm a Project Information Manager / BIM Manager / Digital Engineering Manager at Hatch, an engineering consultancy with a strong presence in energy, mining, and infrastructure. My role sits between the engineering disciplines and the digital platforms they rely on — setting up the common data environments, information standards, and BIM workflows that keep large multi-disciplinary teams aligned.
My work spans road, rail, tunnels and energy projects. Across all of them the hat is a similar one: making sure the information that flows out of design is useful, trusted, and ready for construction and operations.
Alongside project work, I'm Hatch's Global Technical Lead for Bentley OpenRoads / OpenRail, supporting the global work environment, training and best-practice use of our civil design tooling.
The long version
I've been at this for about twenty years, in a few different guises.
- Now — Project Information / BIM / Digital Engineering Manager at Hatch, and Global Technical Lead for Bentley OpenRoads / OpenRail. Digital lead on major road, rail, tunnel and energy projects.
- Before Hatch — Team Leader Design Systems at VicRoads, responsible for CADD systems, standards, and user support across the organisation.
- Alongside that — self-employed, providing scaffolding and formwork design and drafting to a mix of commercial, healthcare, and infrastructure builds.
- And before all of that — a web developer. That part of my career is the one that most influences how I think about data, pipelines, and automation today.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Engineering (Hons), Civil & Infrastructure — RMIT University
- Engineering Design (Civil Engineering) — RMIT University
- MIEAust · CPEng · NER
- APEC Engineer · IntPE (Aus)
- Registered Professional Engineer (Victoria)
Selected past projects
A handful of the work I've been part of over the years:
- Tunnels Transport for NSW — Western Harbour Tunnel (M&E fit-out)
- Tunnels Sydney Metro — Western Sydney Airport station boxes & tunnels
- Rail Cross River Rail, Brisbane
- Rail Suburban Rail Loop, Package C (tender)
- Rail ARTC Inland Rail — Tottenham to Albury, Tranche 2 (tender)
- Road Lathams Road Upgrade — Principal Civil Designer
- Road North-East Link West (Victoria)
Tools of the trade
Day-to-day I work across Bentley OpenRoads, OpenRail, OpenBridge, OpenBuildings and ProjectWise; Autodesk Revit, Civil 3D, Navisworks and Dynamo; plus iConstruct, Revizto, and 12D — and a long list of small scripts and bits of code that glue them together.
What I'm interested in
- Digital engineering & BIM — information management as a design discipline in its own right.
- Software development — especially in the quiet spaces between big engineering tools.
- 3D & visualisation — parametric modelling, reality capture, and turning design data into something you can actually see.
- Automation — replacing the fiddly, repetitive parts of project delivery with something reliable.
- AI & applied ML — how LLMs and applied machine learning can change the way engineers find, review, and reason about project information.
Why this site?
I'd been meaning to have a place to think out loud for a while. This is it. Expect notes on whatever I'm working on or reading — engineering, code, AI, occasionally something about how a project actually gets built. Nothing I write here reflects the views of my employer or any client.
